Two Flat Kitchen
Design Challenge: Redesign an existing kitchen to provide a more efficient workspace and better storage.
Solution: This outdated and over-stuffed kitchen needed a thoughtful and budget-conscious makeover. A series of disconnected cabinets and surfaces made up the workspace, and storage was limited to a few drawers and cabinets, and a small pantry - which also housed the refrigerator.
All existing elements were removed and replaced with clean-lined, natural maple cabinets - including a built-in 30" high surface that serves as both workspace and breakfast table. An original recessed cupboard that was, unfortunately, beyond restoration, was replaced with a new built-in that created a similar look. The addition of new small-scale appliances allowed the refrigerator to move out of the pantry, completing an efficient kitchen work triangle and opening the pantry for expanded storage - including a work-height cabinet.
The homeowners' creative aesthetic are reflected in the red countertops paired with light apricot walls. In time, a multi-color glass tile backsplash and floating shelves above the sink will complete the final phase of the makeover.
